Canada’s suspension of its direct visa program has led Indian students to seek alternatives, particularly in the U.S. and New Zealand, due to stricter Canadian visa rules. A survey highlights that students now prioritize stable visa policies and educational value, with interest in Canada declining by 9% from last year.

Canada’s recent suspension of its popular direct visa scheme for foreign students has prompted Indian students to consider alternative study destinations, such as the U.S. and New Zealand, according to a survey by the International Development Programme (IDP) Education. The survey, conducted from August to September 2024, gathered responses from over 6,000 students across 114 countries, with a large representation from India.

While Canada, the U.K., and Australia have traditionally been top destinations for higher education, the survey revealed a shift. Only 16% of students now view Canada as their preferred choice, marking a 9% decline from the previous year. Factors influencing this shift include diplomatic tensions and Canada’s tightened visa policies aimed at curbing immigration, which have discouraged many international students from applying.

The U.S. and New Zealand, meanwhile, are becoming increasingly attractive to students, with a 4% increase in interest for the U.S. and a smaller but notable rise for New Zealand. Indian students, in particular, are now leaning towards these nations due to their relatively stable visa regulations and perceived value for money.

An IDP counsellor noted that visa policy predictability has become a decisive factor for students, many of whom are delaying plans or choosing countries where they can anticipate a more secure path to study and work opportunities. This change in preferences reflects a growing emphasis on stability and long-term prospects, both academically and financially.

With 66% of surveyed students considering multiple countries, it’s clear that flexibility in visa policies, along with quality education, will be crucial for attracting future international students.
