Chandrayaan-3's Flawless Lunar Orbit

Saturday, 5th August, 2023 marked a significant achievement for the Chandrayaan-3 mission as it successfully accomplished the Lunar Orbit Insertion (LOI) milestone. The Lunar Orbit Insertion (LOI) procedure was executed by performing a retro-burn at the point closest to the moon (Perilune) for a duration of 1835 seconds, beginning at 7:12 PM IST from Mission Operations Complex (MOX), ISTRAC, Bengaluru. This action resulted in the desired orbit of 164 km x 18074 km.

The upcoming lunar-bound orbit maneuver is slated for August 6, 2023, between 22:30 and 23:30 Hrs. IST.

On Saturday Chandrayaan-3 got one more step closer to moon landing with successful Lunar Orbit Insertion (LOI).

Chandrayaan-3's health remains stable, continuously monitored from the Mission Operations Complex (MOX) at ISRO Telemetry, Tracking, and Command Network (ISTRAC), along with support from the Indian Deep Space Network (IDSN) antenna near Bengaluru and assistance from ESA and JPL Deep Space antenna.

ISRO has successfully placed its spacecraft into lunar orbit for the third consecutive time, in addition to achieving a similar feat with Martian orbit insertion.

As the mission progresses, a sequence of planned maneuvers will gradually lower Chandrayaan-3's orbit, positioning it over the moon's poles. Following certain maneuvers, the propulsion module will detach from the lander while in orbit. Subsequently, a series of intricate braking maneuvers will be conducted to enable a gentle landing in the Moon's South Polar region on August 23, 2023.

On the accomplishment of successful LOI, ISRO tweeted,

"Chandrayaan-3 Mission:

“MOX, ISTRAC, this is Chandrayaan-3. I am feeling lunar gravity 🌖

Chandrayaan-3 has been successfully inserted into the lunar orbit.

A retro-burning at the Perilune was commanded from the Mission Operations Complex (MOX), ISTRAC, Bengaluru.

The next operation - reduction of orbit – is scheduled for Aug 6, 2023, around 23:00 Hrs. IST."
