Chief Justice Appointments Suggested for Uttarakhand, Odisha, and Meghalaya High Courts

In a significant development, the Supreme Court collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud, has recommended the appointment of chief justices to lead three high courts in Uttarakhand, Odisha, and Meghalaya. The move comes as a crucial step in ensuring the smooth functioning of these high courts.

In a significant development, the Supreme Court collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud, has recommended the appointment of chief justices to lead three high courts in Uttarakhand, Odisha, and Meghalaya. The move comes as a crucial step in ensuring the smooth functioning of these high courts.

The esteemed members of the collegium, Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Sanjiv Khanna played an instrumental role in putting forth their suggestions for these high-profile appointments.

The recommended chief justice nominees include Justice Ritu Bahri for the Uttarakhand High Court, Justice Chakradhari Sharan Singh for the Odisha High Court, and Justice S Vaidyanathan for the Meghalaya High Court. Each nominee brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the table.

Justice Ritu Bahri, currently serving as a judge in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, is proposed for the position of Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand High Court. Her impressive track record includes authoring 843 reported judgments during her 13-year tenure as a high court judge, with 247 of them delivered within the last five years. This nomination not only recognizes her judicial contributions but also enhances gender representation among chief justices.

In the case of the Odisha High Court, the retirement of Justice Subhasis Talapatra created a vacancy in the office of the Chief Justice. Justice Chakradhari Sharan Singh, a senior judge at the Patna High Court, has been nominated for the role. With a remarkable record of 1,246 reported judgments, including 562 in the last five years, his appointment is well-deserved. Furthermore, the collegium considers it essential to provide representation for the Patna High Court among chief justices of other high courts.

The third nomination goes to Justice S Vaidyanathan, a judge at the Madras High Court, for the position of Chief Justice at the Meghalaya High Court. During his ten-year tenure, he authored 1,219 reported judgments, with 692 delivered in the last five years. This appointment also addresses the need for better representation of the Madras High Court among chief justices of other high courts.

These recommendations mark a significant step toward ensuring the efficiency and effectiveness of the judicial system in these three states. The appointments of these eminent judges to the highest judicial positions will contribute to the delivery of justice and upholding the rule of law.
