Two home guards, one civilian, and ten police
officers were killed and injured when a mob attacked a Vishva Hindu Parishad
(VHP) march in the Nuh district of Haryana. Stones were thrown, cars were set
on fire, and fighting broke out when the mob tried to disrupt the VHP parade.
As word of the violence spread, rioters in the Gurugram neighbourhood of Sohna
also torched vehicles and a store.
The Brij Mandal Jalabhishek Yatra, organised by the
VHP, was launched from Gurugram's Civil Lines. A gang of men near Nuh's Khedla
Mod, however, blocked the procession's passage and attacked it. According to
reports, a Bajrang Dal activist in Ballabhgarh uploaded an offensive video to
social media, sparking the conflict.
According to early reports, violence erupted after rumours spread that Monu Manesar was involved in the yatra. In the Bhiwani district, cow vigilante Monu Manesar was arrested for the murder of two Muslim males. He denied going on the yatra, saying the VHP warned him not to go so as to keep peace.
Two home guards tragically lost their lives, while
numerous police officers were hurt during the fierce fight. Stones were thrown,
slogans were chanted, and arson was recorded in the Sohna neighbourhood of
Gurugram as well.
Gurugram and Nuh both issued prohibitory orders
under Section 144 of the CrPC in reaction to the unrest. To help defuse the
heated situation between different religious groups, mobile internet services
were cut down in the Nuh area until August 2.
The government of Haryana sent reinforcements from other districts to Nuh, with the hope that they could fly in. The police in Nuh, India, had to evacuate about 2,500 people who had taken refuge in a Shiv temple.
With the slogan "Haryana Ek Haryanvi Ek" (Haryanvis are one), Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar called for calm and unity. He promised severe punishment for the guilty.
Authorities are working to restore peace and
provide justice for the victims of the recent violent conflicts, but the
situation remains tight.
