E-learning platform Unacademy finds itself embroiled in a controversy after sacking tutor Karan Sangwan for suggesting students vote for "educated candidates". The move has sparked a wave of backlash, with criticism from political leaders and social media users alike.

Unacademy co-founder Roman Saini defended Sangwan's termination by pointing to a violation of the company's code of conduct after a video of his class, in which he encouraged students to vote for literate politicians, went viral. According to Saini, classrooms are not places for free speech.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi strongly disagreed with Unacademy's decision, emphasising that supporting well-educated politicians is not a biassed viewpoint. She questioned the logic behind sacking Sangwan for advocating for literate leaders among young people and argued that such views had a good impact on the electorate.

Concerned that voicing an opinion about educated leaders could cost him his job, Chaturvedi went so far as to compare the action to unjustified trolling.

The decision to terminate has been widely criticised, and thousands of users have reported uninstalling the Unacademy app as a result. As a sign of the broad disapproval of the choice, the hashtag #UninstallUnacademy started trending.

Delhi's Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal joined in, too, calling Unacademy's decision into question. He worried that India's illiterate public officials would be unable to help the country progress in the modern scientific and technological period.

After being let go, Karan Sangwan started a YouTube channel where he discussed the events leading up to his dismissal and the subsequent uproar. This action shows how committed he is to maintaining his public voice on issues of education and politics.

This instance demonstrates how effective social media can be at amplifying criticism and starting conversations in the public sphere. Concerns concerning academic freedom and the broader responsibility of educational institutions in forming well-informed citizens are also raised.
