Controversies have arisen during the Afghanistan vs Bangladesh cricket game which continues to cause debate among the fans and commentators. Currently, Afghan all-rounder Gulbadin Naib is in trouble with the ICC for time-wasting and was accused of pretending to be injured so as to delay the game.

The event happened shortly before rain interrupted play with Bangladesh on 81/7, still 2 runs behind on the DLS calculation at the time. It has been learnt that the Afghanistan coach Jonathan Trott had messaged the players to reduce the rate of cricket. Subsequently, Naib was photographed limping while holding his hamstring and fallen on the ground while fielding at slip.

There were frowning faces when Naib was thought to have been injured and especially when there was footage of him being assisted off the ground as the covers were being placed. However, this raised eyebrows when Naib had to come back to bowl the 15th over once play resumed.

Commentator Simon Doull was not amused stating that what Naib did was ‘unacceptable’. While the commentary team reacted to this in equal measure with laughter and criticism with some suggesting that Naib deserved an “Oscar” or an “Emmy”.

It has also sparked renewed debates on sports manliness and games man-like conduct in cricket. While some may perceive it as a good business decision within the legal and legitimate frameworks of the sport, others may consider it as being unfair and against the spirit of the game.

As the match progresses, the cricketing world remains to wait for any reaction or sanction on the behavior of Naib. This issue contributes an additional degree of competitiveness to an already tightly fought cricket series between Afghanistan and Bangladesh.
