A technical snag in Mumbai's Central Railway signalling system disrupted local train services, causing delays and overcrowding. The issue, worsened by strong winds, was resolved after an hour, but residual delays persisted. Commuters expressed frustration over frequent issues, while authorities promised improvements in train frequency and infrastructure maintenance.

A technical fault in the signalling system caused major disruptions to Mumbai's Central Railway local train services on Tuesday morning, inconveniencing thousands of commuters. The issue occurred on the south-bound slow track between Diva and Mumbra railway stations in Thane district at approximately 4:55 AM.

According to officials, the fault led to delays of 15-20 minutes on the main line, causing overcrowding on platforms and inside the trains. The signalling issue was rectified around 6 AM, more than an hour after the problem surfaced. However, residual delays continued to impact services, leading to frustration among daily passengers.

Railway officials reported that strong winds had bent an overhead equipment pole between Thane and Mulund, exacerbating the situation. Efforts were promptly initiated to fix the damaged infrastructure and restore normal operations. Swapnil Nila, Chief Public Relations Officer of Central Railway, confirmed that services were gradually resuming, although congestion remained a challenge during peak hours.

With the Central Railway operating nearly 1,800 local train services daily, disruptions of this nature significantly impact the city’s transportation network. More than 35 lakh commuters rely on these trains for their daily travel across the main line and other suburban corridors, including the Harbour and Trans-Harbour lines.

Commuter groups expressed their dissatisfaction over the frequent technical issues plaguing Mumbai's suburban railway system. Many called for improved infrastructure maintenance and quicker response times to such breakdowns.

Meanwhile, the Railway Ministry has been working on reducing train intervals from three minutes to two minutes and enhancing air conditioning systems in trains to improve commuter comfort. Authorities assured that steps are being taken to prevent such incidents in the future.
