The appalling incident came to light when a video of the incident surfaced, leading to widespread condemnation across the country. The video showed the mob burning down houses and forcing the two women to walk naked in front of onlookers.

The survivor in the video revealed her harrowing experience, recounting that three men surrounded her and made lewd remarks, but fortunately, they did not go through with their heinous intent. However, she endured the trauma of being violated through molestation.

Despite his dedication to protecting the nation, the retired subedar of the Assam Regiment felt devastated after failing to safeguard his home, wife, and fellow villagers in the aftermath of his military service.

In response to the incident, the authorities have taken action, arresting five individuals connected to the case. The Manipur Police continue their efforts to apprehend the remaining culprits and ensure justice for the victims.

The incident took place amid ongoing ethnic violence in the state, which erupted when a "Tribal Solidarity March" was organized on May 3 to protest the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. The clashes have led to more than 160 deaths and numerous injuries, exacerbating tensions between the Meiteis, who form the majority in the Imphal Valley, and the tribals, including Nagas and Kukis, who constitute a significant portion of the population residing in the hill districts.
