The IMD has warned fishermen to stay away from the southeast Bay of Bengal as squally weather conditions and wind speeds of up to 50 kmph are expected from Sunday onwards. From May 8 to 12, the IMD has recommended that visitors, water-based activities, and vessels in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands be regulated as a precautionary measure.

A brewing storm: low-pressure system forms in the Bay of Bengal, which may intensify into a cyclonic storm

The formation of a low-pressure area is expected to take place over the southeast Bay of Bengal by May 8. This low-pressure system is predicted to concentrate into a depression around May 9, which may then intensify into a cyclonic storm. If it does intensify, the cyclonic storm is expected to move towards the central Bay of Bengal and northwards.

IMD's Mohapatra Warns of Cyclone Mocha's Uncertain Path and Possible Landfall in South Bengal

Mohapatra, the Director-General of the IMD, has stated that the details about the path and intensity of Cyclone Mocha will be provided only after the formation of the low-pressure area. He also stated that there is a possibility of Cyclone Mocha making landfall finally in the coastal belt of Bangladesh-Myanmar by the end of next week, affecting South Bengal.

On May 8, the met office predicted that there will be slight to moderate rainfall in various areas of West Bengal due to the increase in humidity and temperature. Despite this, the weatherman confirms that there is no imminent danger from Cyclone Mocha, and the path of the storm will become more apparent in the next 48 hours.

Rainfall is forecasted for Northern Bengal, but Cyclone Mocha unlikely to hit the region

The weather forecast predicts that light rainfall will occur in several districts of West Bengal's northern region, such as Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Coochbehar, Uttar Dinajpur, Dakshin Dinajpur, and Malda within the next 24 hours. However, it is unlikely that the northern districts of Bengal will be impacted by the approaching cyclone.
