Two decades have passed since David Beckham graced
LALIGA, offering the perfect opportunity to reflect on his Spanish sojourn. His
arrival in Spain was highly anticipated, having been the shining star of
Manchester United and the England national team. Beckham was more than just a
sportsman; he was an off-field icon, thanks to his style, fashion sense, and
marriage to Victoria Adams, a Spice Girls member.
In the summer of 2003, after extensive negotiations,
Beckham's transfer to Spain materialized. A recent documentary reveals that the
seeds were sown in April of the same year when Real Madrid clashed with Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Champions League quarter-finals. Real
Madrid emerged victorious, primarily due to Ronaldo's hat-trick, which
overshadowed Beckham's brace, even though he came on as a substitute. Beckham's
post-match chat with Zinedine Zidane, where they exchanged shirts, ultimately
played a pivotal role in convincing him to join Los Blancos.
That summer, flanked by the legendary Alfredo Di Stéfano,
Beckham was unveiled as a Real Madrid player. His choice of the No.23 jersey
surprised many, as it was a tribute to basketball legend Michael Jordan, who
revolutionized the sport and its marketing. Beckham had similar aims – to
revolutionize sports media.
Joining a star-studded squad with players like Iker Casillas, Roberto Carlos, Luis Figo, Zinedine Zidane, Raúl, and Ronaldo, they became known worldwide as The Galácticos. During his four years at the club, Beckham added two titles to his trophy collection – one LALIGA trophy and one Spanish Super Cup. His individual stats were impressive, with 20 goals and 52 assists in 159 appearances for Los Blancos.

However, it was Beckham's extraordinary ability to strike
the ball that stood out the most. With elegant, aesthetic movements, he could
baffle goalkeepers and defenders. This was evident in his free-kick prowess,
with 12 of his 20 Real Madrid goals coming from free-kicks. In fact, Beckham is
tied with Lionel Messi as the fifth-highest free-kick scorer in history, each
with 65 goals.
Beckham's influence on LALIGA endures. The excitement around his compatriot, Jude Bellingham, brings memories of the Beckham era. He also left a mark on other LALIGA stars, such as Antoine Griezmann, who declared himself a Beckham fan. Griezmann's frequent style changes, No.7 jersey preference, and long-sleeved shirts are all inspired by the legendary David Beckham.
