In a tragic turn of events, the suspect responsible for a devastating mass shooting in the US state of Maine has been discovered dead following an intensive two-day manhunt. This extensive search had engaged hundreds of law enforcement officers, making it the deadliest mass shooting in the United States this year.

The suspected shooter, identified as Robert Card, a 40-year-old Army reservist, tragically took his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His lifeless body was found at 7:45 pm (2345 GMT), according to Maine's public safety commissioner, Mike Sauschuck.

The dreadful incident unfolded on a fateful Wednesday evening when Card went on a rampage, leaving 18 individuals dead and 13 others wounded in a bowling alley and a bar-restaurant located in the hard-scrabble city of Maine.

Mike Sauschuck couldn't confirm the exact time when Card turned the firearm on himself but expressed relief that Card was no longer a menace to the community. Governor Janet Mills shared the sentiment, highlighting the successful efforts of first responders in locating the perpetrator.

US Senator Susan Collins, taking to social media, relayed that President Joe Biden personally informed her of the discovery, providing a sense of relief to the people of Maine.

The victims were identified by authorities on Friday, with ages ranging from a husband and wife in their 70s to a 14-year-old boy who tragically lost his life alongside his father.

Card's lifeless body was discovered in Lisbon Falls, southeast of Lewiston, in a wooded area close to a recycling center where he was formerly employed before losing his job.

The impact of the shooting and Card's fugitive status had gripped southern Maine with fear over the past two days. Law enforcement agencies had been diligently pursuing more than 530 tips and leads in an effort to locate Card.

While Card was an Army reservist, he had not been deployed to any combat zone. Recent reports in US media suggested that he had sought psychiatric treatment after claiming to hear voices.

This tragic event marks one of the deadliest mass shootings in the United States since the horrific incident in Las Vegas in 2017 when a gunman opened fire on a crowded music festival, resulting in the loss of 60 lives.

Hours before the breakthrough in the case, authorities announced the lifting of a lockdown that had affected the area around Lewiston, which had led to the closure of schools and businesses.
