Arvind Kejriwal Launches Water-ATMs

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal recently inspected newly installed Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants in the Mayapuri area, announcing a promising initiative to provide purified drinking water to residents. Each person in the area will receive 20 liters of purified water daily through specially designed water ATMs.

Kejriwal highlighted that the Delhi government plans to install 500 water ATMs in slums and densely populated regions to address the issue of inadequate drinking water facilities.

The innovative water ATM system will function like a preloaded card, enabling residents to access purified water easily. The initiative aims to bridge the gap between privileged and underprivileged communities, as Kejriwal emphasized that now even economically disadvantaged individuals can have access to the same quality of water as affluent households with RO systems.

The water supply for these ATMs will be sourced from tube wells and then processed at the RO plants to ensure its purity. This clean water will then be made available for distribution through the water ATMs placed strategically near slums and areas where traditional pipelines cannot be laid.

Earlier this year, the Delhi Chief Minister had directed the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) to take swift action in addressing the problem of contaminated water in various parts of the city. As part of the solution, RO-based purification plants were proposed to be set up in 20 slum clusters across Delhi to provide clean drinking water.

In a review meeting with senior officials of the water utility, Kejriwal stressed the urgency of eliminating contaminated water supply and urged immediate identification of affected areas, followed by a comprehensive plan for permanent resolution.

The initiative to provide purified water through water ATMs is expected to significantly improve the living conditions and health of residents in underserved areas, ensuring that safe and clean drinking water becomes a reality for all.
