Auto and taxi drivers in Delhi-NCR are on a two-day strike against app-based services like Ola and Uber. They demand government action, citing employment concerns and alleged illegal activities. The strike, involving over 15 unions, aims to suspend all auto and taxi services, potentially disrupting commutes across the region.
Commuters in Delhi-NCR are likely to face transportation challenges on August 22 and 23 as auto and taxi driver unions embark on a two-day strike. The protest, involving more than 15 unions from the region, targets app-based cab services like Ola and Uber, highlighting longstanding grievances within the traditional transportation sector.
Kishan Verma, President of Delhi Auto Taxi Transport Congress Union, expressed frustration over the government's lack of response to their concerns. "For several years, we have been writing to governments and departments about companies like Ola and Uber, but no one listens," Verma stated. He alleged a complex relationship between these companies and the government, describing it as a "game of donations."
The unions are demanding action on several fronts. They claim that app-based services are adversely affecting employment opportunities for traditional auto and taxi drivers. Additionally, they've raised concerns about private Ola and Uber taxis potentially being involved in illegal activities such as smuggling and drug trade.
Verma suggested a ban on app-based cab services, stating, "We are not getting anything. E-rickshaw and bikes with private number plates are plying on roads." The unions allege that both central and state governments have failed to ensure adequate compensation for traditional drivers despite repeated appeals.
