A nationwide 'Bharat Bandh' called by Dalit and Adivasi groups has led to protests and road blockades in several states. The peaceful strike demands increased representation in jobs and education, and protection of constitutional rights. The government has stated it won't implement creamy layer provisions for SC/ST reservations.
A nationwide strike, dubbed 'Bharat Bandh', has been called by Dalit and Adivasi organizations, causing disruptions across India. The peaceful protest aims to highlight demands for increased representation of marginalized communities in jobs and education, as well as the protection of their constitutional rights.
The strike comes in response to a recent Supreme Court verdict on sub-categorization of quotas for Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs), and controversies surrounding lateral entry into central civil services. Protesters have taken to the streets in various states, blocking roads and chanting slogans.
In Bihar, members of the Bhim Sena blocked roads in Sheikhpura, while supporters from the Reservation Bachao Sangharsh Samiti obstructed National Highway 83 in Jehanabad. The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) in Bihar has expressed support for the bandh.
Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav described the strike as a mass movement to protect reservation, stating it would "instill a new consciousness among the exploited and deprived."
While emergency services like hospitals and banks are expected to remain open, public transport may be disrupted in some states. Police in Agra have been placed on high alert to prevent any potential law and order situations.

The Union government has responded to the Supreme Court's verdict, stating it has no plans to implement creamy layer provisions for reservation benefits among SC/ST groups. Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized that the government will adhere to the Constitution as drafted by B.R. Ambedkar.
As the day progresses, authorities are closely monitoring the situation to ensure the protest remains peaceful while minimizing disruptions to daily life. The 'Bharat Bandh' serves as a reminder of the ongoing debate surrounding affirmative action and representation in India.
