Delhi’s air quality worsened, with AQI levels exceeding 300 in multiple areas. Smog and rising pollution are causing severe breathing issues for residents. Government measures are in place, but criticism grows over ineffective handling of the crisis. The situation is expected to deteriorate further, especially after Diwali.
Delhi’s air quality has deteriorated drastically, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) crossing 300 in several areas, categorizing it as "very poor." On Saturday morning, Anand Vihar and Akshardham recorded AQI levels of 334. Smog blanketed parts of the city, and residents have reported breathing difficulties, coughing, and eye irritation.
Key factors contributing to the rising pollution include dust, stubble burning from neighboring states, and weather changes with winter approaching. The government has initiated the first stage of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), which includes measures such as frequent water sprinkling on roads to reduce dust.
Despite efforts, AQI has spiked, with areas like Wazirpur recording a level of 390 on Friday. Citizens are calling for stricter enforcement, including fines for open burning and increased use of public transport to reduce pollution. Delhi's environment minister Gopal Rai acknowledged the worsening air quality, stating that 13 spots had crossed AQI 300. Meanwhile, opposition parties criticized the ruling AAP for failing to control pollution during its tenure.
