Ram Shankar Katheria, a former Union minister and member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has been sentenced to two years in prison by an Agra court.
The verdict is in connection with an assault case dating back to 2011, where Katheria was accused of attacking an employee working for a power supply company.
As a consequence of this court ruling, Katheria's position as the sitting Lok Sabha member representing Etawah in Uttar Pradesh is likely to be jeopardized, as elected representatives convicted of offenses carrying a two-year or longer sentence face immediate disqualification under the Representation of People Act, 1951.
Ram Shankar Katheria has held significant political roles in the past, including serving as the Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development from November 2014 to July 2016 and chairing the National Commission for Scheduled Castes. Currently, he is a member of the Parliament's Standing Committee on Defence and the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Home Affairs.
In addition to this recent case, Katheria was previously involved in a 2019 incident where he was accused of a violent attack on toll plaza staff in Agra. The incident, captured by CCTV cameras, showed Katheria's bodyguards allegedly assaulting the toll plaza employees and firing shots. However, the BJP leader maintained that his security guards acted in self-defense, as they were provoked by an attack from the toll plaza staff.
Acknowledging the court's decision, Katheria expressed respect for the verdict and confirmed his intention to appeal the ruling, exercising his right to do so. Nevertheless, his political future remains uncertain due to the disqualification implications resulting from the recent sentencing.
