Dense fog disrupted Delhi-NCR as temperatures remained above normal amid a cold wave. Visibility dropped to zero in many areas, affecting travel. The IMD predicts light rain and a gradual rise in temperatures, with dense fog persisting in northern states until later this week.
Delhi and its surrounding National Capital Region (NCR) experienced dense fog on Wednesday, with visibility dropping to zero in several areas due to an intensifying cold wave. Noida and Ghaziabad were among the worst affected, with disruptions in traffic movement and concerns over flight and train schedules.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported a minimum temperature of 9°C in Delhi, with the maximum expected to reach 19°C. Despite the cold, temperatures were noted to be “appreciably above normal” in Delhi, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Uttar Pradesh. A cloudy sky with light rain or drizzle is also forecast for the day.
Air and rail services were under strain, with Delhi Airport cautioning passengers about potential delays for flights not equipped with CAT III landing systems. Meanwhile, commuters navigated through reduced visibility, with smog and shallow fog predicted to persist into the evening.
Night shelters across Delhi saw increased footfall as homeless residents sought refuge from the biting cold. The IMD has predicted a gradual rise in temperatures by 2-3°C over the next three days, providing some relief from the chill.
In neighboring states like Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Punjab, dense to very dense fog conditions are expected to prevail until later this week. On Tuesday, the dense fog had already disrupted train schedules and severely reduced visibility across Delhi-NCR.

The IMD emphasized the persistence of southeasterly winds, which are contributing to fog formation. Despite some improvement in air quality due to recent rainfall, residents continue to grapple with the challenges of the season.
