Indonesia faced a catastrophic natural disaster as flash floods and landslides wreaked havoc on Sumatra island, claiming the lives of at least 19 individuals, with 7 others still missing. The incident unfolded amidst torrential rains that triggered a massive landslide, sending tons of mud, rocks, and uprooted trees cascading down the mountainside. The torrents reached a river, causing it to overflow and inundate villages in the Pesisir Selatan district of West Sumatra province.

The local disaster management agency, led by Doni Yusrizal, mobilized rescue efforts to mitigate the crisis. Rescue teams worked tirelessly to retrieve the bodies of seven victims from the severely impacted village of Koto XI Tarusan, with an additional three bodies discovered in neighboring areas. The National Disaster Management Agency confirmed the grim toll, reporting a total of 19 fatalities.

The aftermath of the disaster presented significant challenges for rescue operations. Power outages and blocked roads, layered with mud and debris, hindered the progress of relief efforts. Yusrizal lamented the difficulties faced by rescue teams in navigating the affected areas, exacerbating the urgency of the situation.

Amidst the chaos, over 80,000 individuals sought refuge in temporary government shelters, fleeing from the flood and landslide-stricken regions. Reports indicated that 14 houses were completely buried under the landslide, while approximately 20,000 houses in nine districts and cities across West Sumatra province were submerged, some up to the roof.
