A harrowing bus hijacking in Los Angeles has resulted in a police chase reminiscent of the film "Speed," culminating in the tragic shooting of a passenger. The incident unfolded early Wednesday morning at the intersection of South Alameda Street and 6th Street, prompting a swift response from the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), which surrounded the bus amid reports of a hostage situation.
The bus driver, who was initially one of the hostages, managed to escape with the assistance of SWAT officers. An LAPD spokesperson confirmed that the driver was unharmed. Eyewitnesses described the chaotic scene, noting that the chase through the city appeared to mirror the high-stakes action of a movie.
At approximately 12:45 AM, the unidentified suspect opened fire on a passenger, a 48-year-old man, who later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital after being shot twice. After a pursuit lasting over six miles, SWAT team members apprehended the gunman, whose motives remain unclear, though authorities suspect a connection to an earlier shooting.
Witnesses recounted the intensity of the chase, with one stating, "It looked like the movie Speed." Initial reports suggested that multiple individuals had hijacked the bus, as the driver appeared to comply with the hijacker's demands while being threatened at gunpoint.
