Eknath Shinde's faction decisively won the Shiv Sena split battle in Maharashtra, claiming 57 seats to Uddhav Thackeray's 20. Shinde's accessible leadership, welfare schemes, and strong alliances strengthened his position as the ideological heir of Bal Thackeray. This victory cements his faction’s dominance, posing significant challenges for Uddhav Thackeray’s political future.
In a landmark victory, Eknath Shinde’s faction of the Shiv Sena has decisively claimed the mantle of the "real" Sena, winning 57 of the 81 seats contested in the Maharashtra assembly elections. This outcome cements Shinde's legacy as the ideological heir of Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray and solidifies his position as a key ally of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
The elections marked the culmination of a bitter rivalry that began with the 2022 split in the Shiv Sena, which saw Shinde lead 40 MLAs and independents to topple Uddhav Thackeray's government. This time, Shinde’s faction triumphed in 27 of the 39 direct contests against Uddhav's Shiv Sena (UBT), which managed just 12 victories.
Shinde’s strategy focused on accessibility and welfare initiatives. His government implemented schemes like the Ladki Bahin Yojana, benefiting women from economically weaker sections, and other programs targeting diverse groups. He presented himself as a "common man" rather than a conventional chief minister, contrasting sharply with Uddhav Thackeray, often criticized for being distant from the masses.
Additionally, Shinde’s organizational efforts paid off. He consolidated his base in Thane and Konkan, while assigning leadership roles in Mumbai to his son, MP Shrikant Shinde, to attract members from the UBT faction. His aggressive campaigning, emphasizing financial benefits provided by his government, resonated strongly with voters.
Analysts predict this victory will pose new challenges for Uddhav Thackeray, whose faction already lost the Shiv Sena's name and symbol to Shinde after an Election Commission decision. With a strong electoral mandate, Shinde’s claim to the Shiv Sena’s legacy is now firmly entrenched.
