Matthew Perry, celebrated for his
portrayal of Chandler Bing, had garnered an enormous global fanbase. In prior
interviews, Perry and his fellow cast members, including Rachel Green, Courtney
Cox, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer, and Matt Le Blanc, had candidly discussed
his enduring struggles with drug addiction and various health issues. Perry's
memoir, titled "Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing," even
delved into his near-death experience at the age of 49, which may come as a
surprise to many.
The memoir revealed that Perry had suffered a life-threatening gastrointestinal perforation at the age of 49, caused by his overuse of opioids, which led to a burst colon. This critical condition resulted in Perry slipping into a coma, requiring hospitalization for a harrowing five-month period. Subsequently, he had to utilize a colostomy bag for an additional nine months. In a previous interview with People magazine, Perry disclosed that his chances of survival were as low as two percent during this ordeal. He had been placed on an ECMO machine, a procedure with an incredibly low survival rate.
