Earlier this month the family of Anuj Thapan, one of the arrested who died in police custody after being taken in the case involving the incident of firing outside the house of famous Bollywood star Salman Khan, had moved the Bombay High Court asking for the CBI inquiry into his death.

Thapan’s mother Rita Devi went to the court on Friday and claimed that the police were involved in the murder suspecting foul play. She advocated the formation of a special team by the CBI to investigate Thapan's death.

The petition states that Thapan suffered from physical assault and was tortured by detaining police for 28 years. What is required here is to apply to the court for the footage to be handed over by police from the police station and lockup where Thapan was locked up.

It also aims to keep intact the call data records of the police officials who were involved with the hearing from April 24 to May 2, as well as a fresh post-mortem examination of Thapan's body.

Police submitted May 1 as a day when Thapan allegedly committed suicide in a lockup. Nevertheless, his family asserted that he was murdered and they are demanding a separate inquiry into the details of his fatal accident.

Thapan was a part of the four suspects who were arrested for the April 14 firing incident outside Salman Khan's Mumbai house, and in that incident, no one got harmed even though the men on a motorcycle fired. The charges against him were around providing firearms and ammunition.

Along with him, the other three arrested were known to be Sonu Bishnoi, Sagar Pal, and Vicky Gupta. The police have also announced the names of the gangsters Bishnoi brothers, Lawrence and Anmol, as the wanted culprits.

The police investigation has thus invoked the strict provisions of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crimes Act as they pertain to the specific case.

The firing was considered a backlash of the age-old rivalry between the Lawrence Bishnoi gang and Salman Khan. This was not the first time the actor had been threatened with death by the gang.

With doubts about Thapan's death and allegations of custodial torture, the High Court will now decide whether an independent probe by the CBI is needed in the high-profile case.
