The Bengal bypolls test TMC's standing following the RG Kar case, while Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's electoral debut in Wayanad could mark a new chapter for the Congress.
In a high-stakes round of by-elections, West Bengal and Kerala are witnessing significant political battles, with attention on the Wayanad seat in Kerala where Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is making her electoral debut. Priyanka Gandhi has been fielded by Congress in an attempt to retain the seat previously held by her brother, Rahul Gandhi, and faces candidates from the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the BJP. The Congress has campaigned heavily in Wayanad, with the entire Gandhi family—Sonia, Rahul, and Priyanka—holding rallies and roadshows to galvanize support.
In West Bengal, by-elections are also being held in six constituencies—Naihati, Haroa, Medinipur, Taldangra, Sitai, and Madarihat. This marks the first bypoll since the RG Kar Medical College case, where a junior doctor was reportedly raped and murdered, sparking public outrage and casting a shadow over the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government led by Mamata Banerjee. The incident has become a focal point of contention, with both TMC and BJP candidates addressing the issue as they vie for these key seats. Five of the six seats are traditional TMC strongholds, yet the BJP is optimistic about gaining ground, especially amid criticism of the state government’s handling of the RG Kar case.
