Five MBBS students from Government TD Medical College, Alappuzha, were killed in a car collision with a KSRTC bus. The overloaded vehicle, lacking an ABS system, collided amid heavy rain. Six others are hospitalized. Kerala’s Chief Minister expressed condolences, urging road safety awareness.
In a heartbreaking accident late Monday night, five first-year MBBS students of Government TD Medical College, Alappuzha, lost their lives when their car collided head-on with a Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus. The crash occurred around 9:30 p.m. near Kalarcode on the National Highway amidst heavy rainfall, severely hampering visibility.
The overloaded Chevrolet Tavera, carrying 11 people instead of its eight-passenger limit, suddenly swerved into the bus's path. Alappuzha Regional Transport Officer AK Dilu noted that the 14-year-old rental car lacked modern safety features like an anti-lock braking system (ABS), further contributing to the tragedy.
Emergency services rushed the injured to Government Medical College Hospital, where the five students were declared dead. Six others, including the driver, remain hospitalized. The deceased were identified as Devananthan B, Sreedev Valsan, Ayush Shaji, PP Mohammed Ibrahim, and Mohammed Abdul Jabbar, all aged 19. Their remains were honored at the medical college before being transported to their hometowns for final rites.
The accident has drawn widespread grief and condolences, with Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressing his deep sorrow over the loss of young lives. Ministers Veena George, Saji Cheriyan, and P Prasad visited the college to pay their respects.
