N Chandrababu Naidu, the leader of the Telugu Desam
Party (TDP) and former chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, was arrested today on
charges of corruption relating to a 317 crore scandal within the Andhra Pradesh
State Skill Development Corporation while he was in office. During TDP control,
the corporation was set up to help educate and train the state's youth
population.
In a dramatic early-morning raid, detectives from
the Andhra Pradesh Criminal Investigation Department made the arrest. There had
been a minor scuffle between Mr. Naidu's followers and the police when they
attempted to serve an arrest warrant on him at a function hall in Nandyal late
the night before.
Mr. Naidu disputed his arrest, citing a lack of
evidence and asking for specifics on how his name was connected to the crime.
According to the remand report, the police officers claimed they had enough
evidence to justify holding the suspect.
M. Dhanunjayudu, a senior officer with CID's
Economic Offences Wing, obtained an arrest warrant for Mr. Naidu, invoking the
Prevention of Corruption Act and charging him with criminal conspiracy,
defrauding, and dishonestly inducing delivery of property. This arrest comes
after recent statements made by Mr. Naidu in which he anticipated an arrest and
voiced concerns over possible maltreatment.
The arrest of Mr. Naidu has sparked political
debates in Andhra Pradesh, since it has drawn attention to allegations of
corruption in the state government during his time in office. It would be
interesting to see how the political climate of the region changes as the
judicial proceedings progress.
