CAQM has enforced Stage II of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in Delhi-NCR as air quality worsens, with AQI levels reaching "Unhealthy." Restrictions include bans on diesel generators and certain construction activities. The public is urged to use public transport, while respiratory illnesses are on the rise.
The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has imposed Stage II of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in Delhi-NCR, starting October 22, 2024, as air quality continues to deteriorate. The decision comes after several regions in the capital reported "Unhealthy" to "Very Unhealthy" Air Quality Index (AQI) levels, with Anand Vihar reaching an AQI of 226.
Stage II of GRAP targets "Very Poor" air quality and adds additional restrictions to those already in place under Stage I. These measures include curbs on the use of diesel generators, bans on certain construction activities, and encouraging the use of public transport. Authorities have urged citizens to minimize the use of private vehicles and take longer but less congested routes to reduce emissions.
The pollution in Delhi has worsened due to factors like stubble burning in neighboring states and increasing vehicular emissions. Health professionals, like Dr. Rajesh Chawla of Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, have reported a significant rise in respiratory patients, with a 10-15% increase in cases related to air pollution. The CAQM's appeal also advises residents to regularly change air filters in their vehicles and avoid dust-generating activities during peak pollution months.
