Authorities in Greece issued high-alert warnings as earthquake tremors continued in Santorini and nearby islands for the fourth consecutive day. Schools in Santorini, Ios, Amorgos, and Anafi remained closed, and extra flights were arranged to facilitate residents and tourists seeking to leave the island.

Since Friday, more than 200 undersea quakes have been recorded in the Aegean Sea between Santorini and Amorgos. Some tremors exceeded a magnitude of 4, prompting the deployment of emergency response teams. Officials advised people to avoid enclosed spaces and small ports as a precaution.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, speaking from Brussels, urged calm, acknowledging the ongoing intense geological activity. Scientists are closely monitoring the situation, with experts predicting that the seismic activity may persist for weeks.

While no significant damage has been reported, authorities have set up temporary shelters in case evacuations become necessary. The mayor of Santorini assured residents that current measures are purely precautionary.

Aegean Airlines announced additional flights on Monday and Tuesday to support those wishing to leave. Meanwhile, government officials are holding regular meetings with seismologists to assess the risk level.

Greece, located along multiple fault lines, frequently experiences earthquakes. Santorini, known for its volcanic history, was shaped by a massive eruption around 1600 BC, with the last eruption occurring in 1950. The government remains on high alert, prepared for any escalation in seismic activity.
