Guru Nanak Jayanti, a revered Sikh festival celebrated on Kartik Purnima,
commemorates the 554th anniversary of Guru Nanak Saheb, the first Guru of the
Sikhs. Known as Prakash Parv, devotees engage in spiritual activities, visit
Gurudwaras, and recite Guru Granth Sahib. Special bhajan and kirtan programs
are organized, accompanied by langar served by volunteers.
Guru
Nanak, born in 1469 in Talwandi, Punjab (now in Pakistan), devoted his life to
social reform, advocating against caste and class discrimination. His teachings
emphasized unity, humanity, and honesty, reflected in the hymns and sermons
contributing to Sikhism. Guru Nanak Jayanti is an occasion for Sikhs to
celebrate their Guru's birth on Kartik Purnima.
