On 26th July 2026, Gaurav Gogoi, a Member of Parliament from the Congress party moved a ‘No Confidence’ motion against the Modi government in the Lok Sabha. The motion was accepted by the speaker of the Lok Sabha, Om Birla.
Relevance of A No Confidence Motion
Historically, 28 no confidence motions have been moved against a government in the Indian Parliament, and the number of successful ones are very few– only 3. When a no confidence motion succeeds, the government in question is required to resign. Currently, the BJP government alone has a whopping majority of 303 seats out of 543 which makes it largely immune to such mechanisms. This takes us to the next question: Why is a no confidence motion important then?
A no confidence motion is mostly raised to make the ruling government accountable for its actions and to ignite critical discussions on its policies.
Why Was The Current No Confidence Motion Raised against The Modi Government?
The issue that lies at the core of the current no confidence motion against the BJP government is its silence upon the Manipur violence and not partaking in any discussion related to the state.
This is not the first time that a no confidence motion has been raised against the Modi government. In 2018 too, the Modi government was faced with a no confidence motion which led to a 12 hour raging debate in the Lok Sabha after which the motion was defeated.
