In a strategic collaboration, renowned PPC manufacturer HP is teaming up with Google to commence the production of Chromebooks in India starting on October 2. This significant step will occur at the state-of-the-art Flex Facility near Chennai, where HP has been engaged in the assembly of laptops and desktop computers since August 2020.
HP India's Senior Director of Personal Systems, Vickram Bedi, expressed his enthusiasm about this venture, emphasizing that manufacturing Chromebook laptops within India would not only make affordable PCs more accessible to Indian students but also bolster the government's 'Make in India' initiative. Additionally, HP is a participant in the government's Rs 17,000 crore production-linked incentive scheme for IT hardware.
Google's Head of Education for South Asia, Bani Dhawan, hailed the local production of Chromebooks with HP as a pivotal milestone in furthering the digital transformation of education in India. Chromebooks, powered by Google's ChromeOS, come at a competitive price point when compared to notebooks featuring proprietary operating systems.
These versatile devices have already made a substantial impact in K-12 education worldwide, benefiting over 50 million students and educators. The partnership between HP and Google aims to foster a shared vision of supporting India's digital education ecosystem by providing affordable, secure, and high-quality computing devices to educational authorities, schools, and institutions.
This move also expands HP's portfolio of India-made PCs, adding to its already burgeoning presence in the country's manufacturing sector. HP has steadily broadened its manufacturing operations in India since 2020 and, as of December 2021, initiated the assembly of a diverse range of laptops, including HP EliteBooks, HP ProBooks, and HP G8 series notebooks.
Furthermore, HP has diversified its range of locally manufactured commercial desktops, introducing various models of desktop mini towers (MT), mini desktops (DM), small form factor (SFF) desktops, and an array of All-in-One PCs. This comprehensive approach reinforces HP's commitment to supporting India's digital education landscape while boosting its 'Make in India' initiatives.
