The Supreme Court lifted the stay on proceedings against Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in connection with the 2015 Bargari sacrilege cases, a key issue in Punjab politics. Although Ram Rahim has not been convicted of the sacrilege, suspicions remain due to witness testimonies and arrests of Dera followers. The desecration of the Guru Granth Sahib and subsequent police actions led to protests and fatalities, fueling political tensions.

In a significant legal development, the Supreme Court on Friday lifted the stay imposed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court on proceedings against Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in connection with the 2015 Bargari sacrilege cases. These cases revolve around the desecration of the Guru Granth Sahib in Faridkot, Punjab, which led to widespread protests.

The sacrilege incidents included the theft of a ‘bir’ (copy) of the Guru Granth Sahib, the scattering of torn pages of the holy book, and the display of handwritten sacrilegious posters in the Bargari area. The protests that followed saw two people killed in police firing at Behbal Kalan and injuries sustained by protesters in Kotkapura, making this a highly sensitive issue in Punjab.

While Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, the jailed head of the Dera Sacha Sauda sect, has not been conclusively linked to the sacrilege incidents in court, many Sikh groups suspect his involvement. Some Dera followers were arrested during investigations, and witness testimonies pointed towards the sect's involvement, though no direct legal conviction against Ram Rahim has been made for the sacrilege.

This case has remained a politically charged issue in Punjab, with political parties blaming each other for either shielding the Dera or not adequately pursuing the investigation. The events surrounding the sacrilege and subsequent police actions have become key topics in election campaigns within the state.
