Independence Day Celebrations in Karachi Turn Deadly, Three Killed in Aerial Firing

Karachi’s Independence Day celebrations turned deadly as aerial firing killed three people, including a child, and injured over 60 others. Police condemned the incidents as reckless and vowed strict action. Despite repeated warnings, celebratory gunfire remains a persistent hazard during festive events in Pakistan, often resulting in tragic casualties.

At least three people lost their lives and more than 60 others were injured in Karachi after celebratory aerial firing marred Pakistan’s Independence Day festivities. The incidents occurred across multiple parts of the city late Wednesday night and early Thursday morning, turning moments of national pride into tragedy.

Among the dead was an eight-year-old girl struck by a stray bullet in Azizabad and a senior citizen, identified as Stephen, killed in Korangi. Authorities confirmed that a third victim also succumbed to injuries from similar incidents. The violence left 64 people wounded, many of them caught in the crossfire while participating in public gatherings or returning home from celebrations.

Police have launched an investigation into the shootings, describing the acts as “reckless and dangerous.” Officials urged citizens to choose safer ways to mark the country’s 78th Independence Day, stressing that random gunfire not only violates the law but also endangers lives.

Law enforcement has pledged strict action against those responsible for firing into the air, a practice that has plagued Karachi for years. Earlier this year, the city witnessed a spate of similar violence, with dozens killed or injured due to stray bullets, many linked to robbery attempts or personal disputes.

Despite repeated warnings and campaigns against the practice, aerial firing remains a common sight during festive events in Pakistan. The latest casualties have reignited calls from rights groups and civic leaders for more robust enforcement, community awareness, and penalties to deter such incidents in the future.

Pakistan celebrates its Independence Day annually on August 14, commemorating its creation in 1947 following the partition of British India. For the families affected this year, the day’s patriotic spirit was overshadowed by grief and loss.
