Amid reports of a Chinese naval vessel arriving at a Sri Lankan port, the Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson, Arindam Bagchi, said that India is closely monitoring developments..
The vessel, identified as the HAI YANG 24 HAO, docked at Colombo port yesterday, raising concerns about its nature and purpose.
The Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy warship's arrival sparked concerns, and Bagchi's remarks underscored the Indian government's commitment to safeguarding national security. The ship's departure, scheduled for August 12, has heightened the need for vigilance.
The incident recalls a similar occurrence last year when China's Yuan Wang 5, disguised as a research vessel, arrived at Hambantota Port. India raised security concerns then, as the vessel's capabilities exceeded its stated purpose. This incident highlighted the strategic significance of the port, which lies around 250 km from Colombo and was constructed using substantial Chinese loans.
The Sri Lankan government's challenge in repaying the Chinese loans led to the port's transfer to Chinese control under a 99-year lease agreement. This move fuelled geopolitical discussions around China's expanding influence in the region.
