Lunar race

In a thrilling space showdown, India's Chandrayaan-3 and Russia's Luna 25 are poised for remarkable lunar touchdowns next week. Luna 25 will make history on August 21, followed by Chandrayaan-3's anticipated landing on August 23.

Both missions are blazing trails toward uncharted territory near the Moon's South Pole.

Since the Soviet Union's Luna 24's landing in 1976, China alone achieved Moon landings with Chang'e 3 and Chang'e 4 in 2013 and 2018. Now, India and Russia are vying for their maiden soft landings.

Lunar race intensifies as India's Chandrayaan-3 and Russia's Luna 25 gear up for historic Moon landings near the South Pole.

Distinct factors influence the critical timing of these lunar touchdowns. Luna 25 rapidly reached lunar orbit in just six days post its August 10 launch, while Chandrayaan-3 embarked on a 23-day journey after its July 14 liftoff due to ISRO's reliance on a circuitous route for energy and cost efficiency.

With both crafts now in lunar orbit, Luna 25 needs to hold an edge in speed. Other considerations drive the landing dates. August 23 marks the beginning of the lunar day, a pivotal factor due to the instruments on Chandrayaan-3 having a mere one lunar day's lifespan, reliant on solar power.

As the Moon's temperature plunges below minus 100 degrees Celsius at night, Chandrayaan-3's landing at the outset of the lunar day optimises observations. If not on August 23, a landing is slated for the subsequent day or after an entire lunar month.

Russia
In a thrilling space showdown, India's Chandrayaan-3 and Russia's Luna 25 are poised for remarkable lunar touchdowns next week. Luna 25 will make history on August 21, followed by Chandrayaan-3's anticipated landing on August 23.

Meanwhile, Luna 25 can land anytime, carrying an onboard generator for night-time heat and power. The selected landing sites are approximately 68 and 70-degrees South latitude for Chandrayaan-3 and Luna 25, respectively, a marked shift from equatorial zones where prior landings occurred.

These impending achievements underscore a bustling future for the Moon's polar region. The distance between the two craft's landing spots could span several hundred kilometres on the lunar surface. With the promise of discovering frozen water, the Moon's poles are set to become a focal point for forthcoming explorations.
