The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) achieved a
remarkable feat on Saturday, October 21, as it relaunched the ISRO TV-D1
rocket, a critical component of India's Gaganyaan Mission. This achievement
followed an initial setback but demonstrated ISRO's resilience and
determination.
The Gaganyaan mission's test vehicle, carrying essential
payloads for the Gaganyaan human space flight program, ignited at precisely 10
a.m., marking a significant milestone for the Indian space agency. ISRO swiftly
addressed the glitches that had hampered the rocket's first launch attempt from
Sriharikota. ISRO Chairman S Somanath expressed his satisfaction, saying,
"I am delighted to announce the successful completion of the Gaganyaan
TV-D1 mission."
This ambitious endeavour propels India towards becoming the fourth nation globally, following the United States, Russia, and China, to embark on a manned spaceflight mission. Building on the successes of previous Indian space missions, including Chandrayan-3 and Aditya L1, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set ambitious goals for the nation. These include establishing the 'Bharatiya Antariksha Station' (Indian Space Station) by 2035 and sending the first Indian to the Moon by 2040.

This second launch attempt came after a brief delay, with
the first launch halted just five seconds before the scheduled time. The test
aimed to assess the crew's ability to safely escape the rocket in the event of
a malfunction. ISRO's Chief explained that engine ignition issues had impeded
the initial lift-off but assured the public that the problems were meticulously
identified and resolved, paving the way for the successful second launch at
10:00 Hrs on the same day.
Following the launch, a series of parachutes were
deployed as the module began its descent, ensuring a safe touchdown in the Bay
of Bengal's waters, approximately 10km from the Sriharikota coast. As per
ISRO's website, the Indian Navy was on standby at a safe distance, with a ship
and a team of divers ready to recover the module and bring it safely back to
shore. The Gaganyaan mission's success represents a momentous step forward in
India's space exploration endeavours.
