Indian Wrestler Mohit Kumar Makes History with U20 World Wrestling Championship Gold

Indian wrestler Mohit Kumar has etched his name in the annals of sports history by clinching the U20 World Wrestling Championship title. Mohit's victory was secured in a gripping battle that unfolded at the 61-kg freestyle event in Jordan, where he triumphed over his adversary Eldar Akhmadudinov with a close score of 9-8.

 

The remarkable achievement makes Mohit Kumar the fourth Indian freestyle wrestler to achieve the distinction of winning a Junior World Championship. This accomplishment not only highlights his prowess but also underscores the rising prominence of Indian wrestlers on the global stage.

Sharing the spotlight with Mohit Kumar, fellow Indian athletes displayed exceptional performances as well. Sagar Jaglan secured a noteworthy silver medal in the FS 79kg category, while Deepak Chahal showcased his skills to earn a commendable bronze medal in the FS 97kg category, all on the second day of the event.

 

Among male Indian wrestlers, Mohit Kumar joins an elite club of gold medalists in the U20 World Championships, following the trailblazing victories of Palwinder Cheema (2001), Ramesh Kumar (2001), and Deepak Punia (2019). Notably, Antim Panghal remains the sole female athlete from India to have clinched a gold medal at the previous edition of this prestigious championship.
