Indian wrestler Mohit Kumar
has etched his name in the annals of sports history by clinching the U20 World
Wrestling Championship title. Mohit's victory was secured in a gripping battle
that unfolded at the 61-kg freestyle event in Jordan, where he triumphed over
his adversary Eldar Akhmadudinov with a close score of 9-8.
The remarkable achievement
makes Mohit Kumar the fourth Indian freestyle wrestler to achieve the
distinction of winning a Junior World Championship. This accomplishment not
only highlights his prowess but also underscores the rising prominence of
Indian wrestlers on the global stage.
Sharing the spotlight with
Mohit Kumar, fellow Indian athletes displayed exceptional performances as well.
Sagar Jaglan secured a noteworthy silver medal in the FS 79kg category, while
Deepak Chahal showcased his skills to earn a commendable bronze medal in the FS
97kg category, all on the second day of the event.
Among male Indian wrestlers, Mohit Kumar joins an elite club of gold medalists in the U20 World Championships, following the trailblazing victories of Palwinder Cheema (2001), Ramesh Kumar (2001), and Deepak Punia (2019). Notably, Antim Panghal remains the sole female athlete from India to have clinched a gold medal at the previous edition of this prestigious championship.
With this remarkable
achievement, India's medal tally stands at four, comprising one gold, two
silver, and one bronze medal. Mohit Kumar's victory signifies the dedication,
rigorous training, and exceptional talent possessed by India's wrestling
fraternity, placing the nation firmly on the world map of wrestling excellence.
