Initial Postmortem Report Indicates Art Director Nitin Desai's Death by Hanging

Art Director Nitin Desai' dead body was found hanging in his ND Studio in Karjat, around 80 km outside Mumbai in Raigad district on Wednesday morning.
Previously, Khalapur Police had brought Desai's body to JJ Hospital for the postmortem. According to Raigad Police, a team of four doctors conducted the postmortem of art director Nitin Desai, and the preliminary findings suggest that the cause of death was hanging. Further investigation is ongoing.
Raigad Superintendent of Police (SP) Somnath Gharge shared with the media that the family members of art director Nitin Desai mentioned his last rites would be held at ND Studios. Furthermore, SP Gharge stated that the investigation is ongoing, and they have seized devices such as mobile phones and other electronic items found at the scene. Statements from Nitin Desai's caretaker and driver have also been taken as part of the ongoing investigations.
Maharashtra MLA Mahesh Baldi stated that the renowned art director behind 'Lagaan' was under financial strain and he speculated that the financial stress might have driven him to end his life. In 2016 and 2018, Nitin Desai's company, ND's Art World Pvt Ltd, had taken two loans from ECL Finance amounting to Rs 185 crore. Difficulties with repayments began to emerge in January 2020.
Desai was renowned for his creative studio designs and had partnered with filmmakers such as Ashutosh Gowarikar, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Rajkumar Hirani, and Sanjay Leela Bhansali. He gained fame for his remarkable contributions to movies like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (2000), Lagaan (2002), Devdas (2003), Jodhaa Akbar (2008), and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015). Throughout his career, he earned three Filmfare Awards for Best Art Direction and four National Film Awards for Best Art Direction.
