At least four people lost their lives on Tuesday in Greenfield, a small town in Iowa after a fierce tornado swept the rural area. It was one of the several storms that hit the Midwest region with tornadoes, rain, and power disturbances.

Greenfield is a town of approximately 2000 people situated 55 miles west of Des Moines and the town was most affected by the storms. Many houses and some commercial buildings were flattened, cars were flipped like toys, and numerous objects were scattered all over the place as the tornado passed through the region.

“A good portion of Greenfield is devastated,” said Iowa State Patrol Sergeant Alex Dinkla at a Tuesday night press briefing, adding there were multiple fatalities but the exact death toll was still being finalized. “We are still counting at this time. ”

Dinkla said approximately 12 people were injured and needed to be taken to other facilities since Greenfield’s medical facility was heavily damaged. Fortunately, he observed that all citizens in Greenfield seemed to have been counted in the aftermath to his surprise.

Pictures and videos captured the destruction: the buildings were flattened, cars were overthrown, power lines were torn down, and trees were cut into pieces across the town.

Tornados were reported in Nebraska, Illinois, and Wisconsin as the storm system ravaged the region. Several states experienced blackouts as strong winds and rains swept through the Midwest.

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds stated that she would visit the Greenfield area on Wednesday to assess the extent of the damage. “We extend our thoughts and prayers to everyone who has been touched by the fatal storms,” Reynolds said. ”The state will continue to support all forms of recovery. ”

Continued severe weather is expected to persist over the next few days as meteorologists monitor the turbulent storm system.
