President Biden expresses love for their son Hunter as his federal gun trial begins, but aims to keep his distance as scandals emerge, creating a difficult balance during his re-election campaign.

President Joe Biden is treading a rather thin ice as the jury selection commenced on Monday in the federal gun trial involving his son, Hunter Biden. The president stated in the press that he loves and supports Hunter as the child's father and at the same time said that he won’t be able to speak about the ongoing case as the president of the country.

At one point, he addressed his fellow citizens directly: “I am the president, but I am also a dad,” Biden said. “I do not and will not opine on pending federal matters as the president. But as a father, there could be no pride greater than a boundless love for my son, faith in his capacities, and admiration for his courage. ”

Hunter Biden could spend up to 25 years in prison over accusations of having falsely stated that he had no drug problem when he bought a gun in 2018. They include substance abuse especially alcohol and drug abuse which has been openly known and even in his book.

The trial is said to focus on the personal issues facing the Biden family and their scandals. Hunter’s former spouse, Kathleen Buhle, is expected to provide the information regarding Hunter’s drug use. At the same time, Hallie Biden, the widow of another son of the president, Beau Biden, who had a romantic relationship with Hunter, can also testify. Communications from Hunter’s family, the contents of his abandoned laptop, and details of his drug use are some of the evidence that could be presented.

In private, however, Biden has been an advocate of the demonstrations while keeping a rather formal distance from the legal processes. He traveled to Delaware to be with his son during the weekend, but he arrived back in Washington to attend Monday’s jury selection, which First Lady Jill Biden and other members of the Biden family attended.

The exposure of the trial opens up possible political risks for Biden as he campaigns for the second term. It might just be a distraction and a way to turn the media attention away from former President Donald Trump’s legal issues. Biden might not also feel very comfortable personally attacking Trump over his criminal conviction especially since his son has a record of the law.

”I think it’s going to be very hard in terms of personal dynamics for Biden,” said author Kate Andersen Brower. “He has been through attempts to keep his private life separate from his public life, or rather it is his only living son which should be very stressful ”
