The
celebrated actor, Johnny Depp, is all set to make his comeback as a director
with the biopic titled "Modi," which revolves around the life of the
renowned Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani, fondly known as "Modi"
among his acquaintances.
Depp
will be co-producing the movie in association with Al Pacino and Barry Navidi.
The movie, scheduled to be presented to potential buyers at Cannes, has already finalized its cast. Riccardo Scamarcio will be playing the role of Modigliani, while Pierre Niney will portray the character of French artist Maurice Utrillo.
Additionally,
Al Pacino will be seen in the role of art collector Gangnat. The film will be
shot in Budapest, and production is expected to commence later this autumn.
Adapted
from Dennis McIntyre's theatrical production titled "Modigliani," the
movie has been penned down by Jerzy and Mary Kromolowski. The plot is centered
around a 48-hour timeline and narrates the story of Modigliani, who is trying
to put an end to his artistic career and escape the city. However, the
protagonist faces obstacles in the form of a police chase.
The
protagonist seeks counsel from his friend and art dealer, Leopold Zborowski,
but his life takes an unexpected turn when he encounters a collector who could
change his life forever.
The
film chronicles the life of the painter and sculptor in Paris in 1916 and
portrays how a tumultuous 48-hour period marked a significant turning point in
his life, cementing his status as a legendary artist.
Johnny
Depp, who is producing the movie under his European production company IN.2
Films, is enthusiastic about presenting this "universally human
story" to the audience. Despite the high-profile legal feud with his
former spouse Amber Heard, Depp is optimistic about the film's prospects and is
looking forward to his comeback in the film industry.
For Depp, this project is another addition to his list of European ventures. The actor is currently also involved in the filming of a historical romantic saga titled "Jeanne du Barry," directed by French filmmaker Maïwenn, where he portrays the role of King Louis XV.
Barry
Navidi, who has previously collaborated with Al Pacino on several projects such
as "The Merchant of Venice" and "Salomé," has revealed that
"Modi" is a project that is deeply personal to Pacino.
He
has further mentioned that the film will showcase a specific phase of Modi's
life and not just his entire biography. Navidi also expressed his excitement to
work again with Johnny, stating that it has been his long-standing dream.
As
the production is slated to begin in Europe during the spring of 2023, more
details about the cast are anticipated to be revealed soon. The Veterans will
handle the movie's global distribution.
Fans
of Depp's directorial skills are eagerly awaiting the release of
"Modi" and are thrilled to see him take up the mantle of a director
once again after his debut feature "The Brave" in 1997.
