Debuting in 2021, Thalaivii hit the screens, chronicling the life and challenges of the late politician-actor and former Tamil Nadu chief minister, J Jayalalithaa. Portraying the lead character, Kangana brought the role to life, under the guidance of director A. L. Vijay and writer V. Vijayendra Prasad. However, the movie faced substantial setbacks both commercially and critically. Struggling to make its mark at the box office, Thalaivii received mixed feedback from reviewers. While Kangana's performance earned her accolades, the story and screenplay came under heavy scrutiny.
