Karishma Tanna, renowned
television actor, experienced a career breakthrough with her role opposite
Ranbir Kapoor in Rajkumar Hirani's Sanju. Despite the film's success, Tanna's
expectations of receiving more film offers were not met. Surprisingly, she
disclosed that she faced an entire year without any work opportunities
following the release of Sanju.
Sanju, directed by Rajkumar Hirani, portrayed the remarkable journey of Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, delving into his struggles with substance abuse, his entanglement in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts, and his romantic relationships. The film featured Ranbir Kapoor in the titular role, alongside Anushka Sharma and Vicky Kaushal in significant roles.
During an interview with
Siddharth Kanan, Karishma Tanna opened up about her expectations after her role
in Sanju, stating, "I believed that even with a small role, Sanju would
propel my career forward. However, nothing materialized. Following the film's
release, I didn't receive the films or projects I anticipated. For a
significant duration of seven to eight months or even a year, I remained
without work. I felt perplexed because despite having only four scenes, critics
had praised my performance.
Reflecting on her life after Sanju, Tanna expressed,
"I had high expectations from the industry that I would receive more work.
However, sometimes you find yourself in a dark place, questioning what life
demands from you. I wondered what more I needed to do to showcase my
acting abilities."
Amidst these circumstances, the actor revealed that she experienced a period of depression and uncertainty about her future career. "I found myself in a state of depression where life seemed devoid of color. It felt dull and lacking vibrancy. I was unsure about the path to take in my career, to the extent that I reached out to people seeking feedback on my acting in Sanju," Tanna added.
Nevertheless, Tanna managed to
overcome this challenging phase by taking matters into her own hands. During
this time, she engaged in Instagram advertisements to sustain herself until
opportunities in the digital medium began to surface.
Presently, the actor is set to make an appearance in Hansal
Mehta's upcoming Netflix series,
Scoop. In the series, Tanna will
portray the character of a crime journalist, drawing inspiration from Jigna
Vora's memoir, Behind The Bars In Byculla: My Days in Prison. Produced by
Matchbox Shots and created by Hansal Mehta and Mrunmayee Lagoo Waikul, the
series is scheduled to be released on Netflix on June 2.
