Kashmir Remains Core Dispute Between India and Pakistan, Says PM Shehbaz Sharif

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif labelled Kashmir the primary source of tension with India, urging international support to reverse Article 370’s revocation. Pakistan marked Youm-i-Istehsal with nationwide rallies, as officials reiterated their call for a resolution based on UN resolutions and stressed readiness to defend against any aggression.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday reiterated that the Kashmir issue is the central point of tension in India-Pakistan relations, renewing Islamabad’s criticism of New Delhi’s 2019 move to revoke Jammu and Kashmir’s special constitutional status. Speaking on the sixth anniversary of Article 370’s abrogation, which Pakistan observes as Youm-i-Istehsal, Sharif called for international intervention to reverse India’s “unilateral” decision.

Sharif stated that lasting peace in the region hinges on addressing the aspirations of the Kashmiri people as outlined in United Nations Security Council resolutions. He emphasised that resolving the Kashmir dispute remains a key pillar of Pakistan’s foreign policy. His comments came as Pakistan conducted symbolic marches and hosted events nationwide and overseas to mark the day of protest.

India had abrogated Article 370 on August 5, 2019, effectively dissolving the former state of Jammu and Kashmir and reorganising it into two Union Territories — Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. The move, according to India, was aimed at ensuring greater integration and development. Pakistan, however, continues to oppose it, labelling it an illegal occupation of disputed territory.

Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar also addressed the occasion, stating that while Pakistan seeks peaceful relations with all its neighbours through dialogue and diplomacy, its military and citizens remain prepared to respond decisively to any act of aggression. Dar reiterated Pakistan’s preference for peaceful engagement but warned that the country would safeguard its sovereignty if challenged.

Special events and rallies were organised across Pakistan, including in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, to highlight the issue on international platforms. Pakistani diplomatic missions held commemorative programmes abroad, underscoring Islamabad’s continued stance on Kashmir amid strained relations with India.
