Kerala Nurses' story broke Palme d'Or jinx in Cannes from India

Two Keralan nurses were needed to break an agonizingly long streak of not competing in the Indian film Palme d'Or competition. The main characters of the movieAll We Imagine As Light, Prabha and Anu, have been instrumental in India's successful re-entry into the prestigious Cannes Film Festival competitive section. Payal Kapadia, who was born in Mumbai, directed the movie.

Malayalam director Shaji N Karun's 1994 film Swaham (My Own) was the final Indian entry to compete for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Both Shaji and Kapadia received their degrees from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune. The principal roles of the nurses in the Hindi and Malayalam production of All We Imagine As Light are portrayed by two Malayalam performers, Kani Kusruti and DivyaPrabha.

When Swaham was chosen to participate at Cannes, she was seated with Karun at the esteemed table of international cinema. Film industry titans like China's Zhang Yimou, Iran's Abbas Kiarostami, and Poland's Krzysztof Kieślowski rose to fame thirty years ago with their respective films "Three Colors: Red," "Through the Olive Trees," and "To Live." Pulp Fiction, the American director's first feature film, took home the Palme d'Or that year.
