Kolkata Medical College’s Ex-Principal Arrested in Corruption Case

The CBI has arrested Dr. Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College, Kolkata, on charges of financial misconduct. The arrest follows allegations of corruption, including selling corpses and extorting students. This case is linked to the recent rape and murder of a doctor at the hospital.
In a major breakthrough, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, and three others for alleged financial impropriety. This arrest comes in the wake of a sad event whereby a female doctor was raped and murdered inside the hospital compound.
This action of the CBI comes in the wake of several allegations against Dr. Ghosh including corruption and possible complicity in the circumstances that led to the death of the doctor. The Calcutta High Court had earlier condemned the investigation of the murder and pointed out that Dr. Ghosh should have been a suspect in the case.
The list of accusations against Dr. Ghosh is long and shocking. A former colleague, Dr. Akhtar Ali, has accused him of numerous illegal activities, including:
- Selling unclaimed corpses
- Trafficking biomedical waste
- Taking orders from medicine and medical equipment sellers
- Demanding money from students in return for good grades
These accusations give a perception of corruption in the institution under the leadership of Dr. Ghosh. The CBI probe that was under way for 15 days before the arrest was ordered by the court after Dr. Ali moved an application.
The arrest of Dr. Ghosh and his associates is a major development in the murder case as well as in the investigation of institutional malpractice. The CBI has filed charges of criminal conspiracy, cheating and under the provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
This case has raised questions about possible fundamental problems in the medical education system and hospital management in the area. In the process of investigation, it may result in other medical facilities being put under more scrutiny.
