Starbucks, federal law

Starbucks got into trouble for breaking the rules of work laws. A judge from the National Labor Relations Board said that when Starbucks gave more money and extra benefits, like perks, to workers who aren’t in a union, they did something against the law. This is not the first time the board has found Starbucks breaking labor laws while trying to prevent unions from forming in their coffee shops.

Judge Mara-Louise Anzalone stated that the main problem in this case is whether Starbucks had the right to give special rewards to workers who didn’t join a union, while wrongly claiming it was required by federal labor law. According to the judge, this was not allowed, and Starbucks went on a serious, company-wide attack against its workers’ freedom to choose union representation.

The trouble started nearly two years ago when the first Starbucks store voted to form a union, sparking a nationwide movement. During this time, Starbucks has been fighting against it, sometimes breaking the law, as found by the National Labor Relations Board. Currently, Starbucks is dealing with numerous charges related to unfair labor practices.
