‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’:-
The Event; The Yatra:
The Bharat Jodo Yatra began on 7th September 2022 from Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu and ended on 30th January 2023 in Srinagar, Kashmir, covering roughly the whole vertical span of India. Rahul Gandhi, the face of the Congress party for the National General Elections 2024, led the Bharat Jodo Yatra on foot for an unprecedented route of 2,200 miles. Rahul Gandhi halted in major cities and villages to address the local problems of the countrymen and attempted to display his level of connection with the common people.

Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra: A New Hope for Congress?
The large scale of the Bharat Jodo Yatra is one aspect that makes the campaign a massive one in contributing towards the efforts put in by Congress keeping in mind the General Elections 2024. Congress has consecutively performed poorly during the two previous general elections. It was evident that no strategic plan was followed except for organizing rallies at random locations and criticizing the Modi government. Rallies and speeches are the most common methods to campaign for elections. However, the Bharat Jodo Yatra has caught the eyeballs of all Indians given its uniqueness and noble cause. Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra is the first of its kind in the recent years of Congress’ election campaigns and hence, it is a remarkable move with respect to Congress’ recent performance and efforts in campaigning for the general elections.
Bharat Jodo Yatra: Attempt to Redesign Rahul Gandhi’s Image
Through the Bharat Jodo Yatra, Rahul Gandhi has desperately tried to mend his image amongst the common public. Rahul Gandhi has hardly been popular among the masses as an intellectual and visionary leader. However, Rahul Gandhi did try to portray himself as a people’s person and said that he has “killed Rahul Gandhi, he is long gone.” Rahul Gandhi even went to the extent of traveling through the northernmost states in only a thin white t-shirt amidst the chilling cold to display his commitment towards the poor people of the nation who can’t afford to buy warm cloth for the winter. However, this move has been labeled as ‘Tshirt Politics’ by media houses.
Coverage by The Media
Many primary Hindi media channels which connect to the masses on a large scale have not given the Bharat Jodo Yatra wide coverage except for the few eminent days such as the days when the rally was reaching its end at Srinagar or during days when Rahul Gandhi made few bold remarks. Not only this, Rahul Gandhi’s role at the Bharat Jodo Yatra has also been portrayed negatively by many media houses with the aid of critical cartoons and remarks.
How Far Is The Bharat Jodo Yatra Effective on Ground?
It’s an Uncertain though very important question that what effect will this yatra have on the outcome of General Election 2024 polls but the yatra has been recognized by many eminent personalities of the country. Some even walked with Rahul whenever the yatra reached their respective areas. This is primarily because the majority of the groups targeted by the Congress for the campaign were minorities and extremely detailed or local concerns. Though the cause and strategy was immensely genuine and practical, a general election is a matter of holding a majority which is effected by many other factos. The BJP has come up with many counter measures to the Bharat Jodo Yatra and most of them are targeted towards the majority such as the Union Budget 2023 itself, the Ram Janam Bhumi Sthapna and much more.
Although politics on the level of channelizing the sentiments of a religious majority for creating a vote bank is not beneficial for any country, there are some practical and realistic points that cannot be changed. The fact that Hindus form the majority of the Indian population cannot be challenged and BJP’s policies are appealing to this Hindu majority. Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi has, on many occasions, criticized the Modi government for its pro-Hindu policies. This is a major reason why Rahul Gandhi as a leader does not appeal to the Hindu majority. Politics is a game with no rules and therefore, no questions can be raised about Modi’s pro- Hindu government which is actually reaping results, as long as it does not hamper the secularism of India.
