A Singapore Airlines flight hit severe turbulence, killing one passenger and seriously injuring nearly 50 others who were violently thrown around the cabin.
One person died and nearly fifty others were seriously injured, including eighteen passengers and thirty-two crew members, when a Singapore Airlines flight from London to Singapore experienced dangerous turbulence over Myanmar last week.
The Boeing 777 passenger jet, with a total of 211 people on board, including passengers and crew, the flight faced unforeseen turbulence after ten hours in the flight at Irrawaddy Basin region. They have reported that the passengers were thrown off the floor with much force to hit the ceiling and the overhead bins, then dropped again.
One of the passengers, Eva Khoo, whose pregnant sister-in-law and other family members were on board, said her brother told her that he was ‘lifted to the ceiling and fell on top of the aisle, with clothes flying all over the cabin. This is their story: Her sister-in-law, who was two months pregnant at the time, suffered a fracture in her back due to the turbulence.
Of all the passengers, Keith Davis and Kerry Jordan, both Australians, received the most critical injuries. Looking back, Davis stated that they were in a “zero-gravity situation, floating towards the ceiling” before they crash-landed. Jordan had spinal cord damage that required her to remain in a passive position for the rest of the flight.
“It was horrific,” said Davis who was taken to a hospital in Bangkok where the plane made an emergency landing. “It was like going down a vertical rollercoaster. ”
The turbulence was so violent that a British passenger, 73-year-old Geoff Kitchen, fainted and was believed to have died of a heart attack despite attempts at resuscitation. In this regard, 21 passengers, among them two flight attendants, and a one-year-old child were taken to intensive care in Bangkok with spinal and other injuries.
Still, the passengers commended the pilots for safely landing the aircraft in Bangkok when the plane was all over the place, and several people were hurt. After a very close shave, Davis described it as “a beautiful touchdown. ”

Singapore Airlines has stated that an investigation into the circumstances of turbulence is underway. Some of the passengers, relatives of Khoo, had to stay in hospital for a long time recovering from severe injuries they received due to the plane’s sharp descending and ascending movement.
