The Lok Sabha Ethics Committee has
decided to postpone its meeting to discuss allegations against TMC MP Mahua
Moitra. Originally scheduled for November 7, the meeting will now take place on
November 9, according to a notice from the Lok Sabha secretariat. The reason for
this rescheduling remains undisclosed.
The delay in the meeting implies that
the committee, chaired by BJP MP Vinod Kumar Sonkar, has concluded its
investigation and will soon provide its recommendations. During the committee's
last deliberations on November 2, members from various political parties
discussed the case.
The BJP holds a majority in the
15-member committee and may take a stern stance on the accusations against
Mahua Moitra. This is particularly significant since she had previously accused
Sonkar of asking inappropriate questions during the last meeting, prompting her
and opposition members to leave the session in frustration. It is anticipated
that some committee members may express dissent in their recommendations to
Speaker Om Birla.
During the November 2 meeting, all five
opposition members walked out, alleging that Sonkar had asked indecent and
personal questions about Moitra's travels, hotel stays, and telephone calls.
Moitra later described the experience as a "proverbial vastraharan" (metaphorical
disrobing).
The committee's chairperson dismissed the opposition members' claims, suggesting that their actions were aimed at protecting Moitra. The committee is expected to scrutinize Moitra's decision to leave the meeting closely as they draft their report.

Furthermore, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey has
accused Moitra of raising questions in the Lok Sabha with the intention of
targeting the Adani Group, allegedly at the behest of businessman Darshan
Hiranandani, in exchange for bribes. Moitra has acknowledged using her login
details for this purpose but denied any financial gain, explaining that many
MPs share their login credentials with others.
The delayed meeting has generated
significant anticipation as the Lok Sabha Ethics Committee evaluates the
allegations against Mahua Moitra and decides on its recommendations regarding
the case.
