Two people were killed and many others got hurt in a big fight between some armed troublemakers and the security forces near a Kuki-Zo settlement in Manipur's Tengnoupal district on Friday.
Some unidentified armed troublemakers shot at the security people who were guarding the Assam Rifles sector headquarters in Pallel. A group of women also stopped the Central security forces from moving forward during this incident.
During attempts to control the crowd, more than 40 women got hurt. Eight troublemakers and three security force members got shot. There was on-and-off shooting in the area, with crowds blocking security forces in multiple places at Pallel, Kakching, and Imphal West.
Manipur police clarified that social media reports of a shootout between Kuki militants and Meitei village volunteers were false. The actual incident involved a shootout between security forces and armed troublemakers in Pallel. One civilian was killed, and eight armed troublemakers were injured.
The identity of one of the deceased is confirmed as Jiten (47) from Kakching while the identity of the other remains unconfirmed. This incident occurred near the Pallel township, where armed troublemakers fired at a community, prompting a response from security forces. Women's groups surrounded the Assam Rifles sector headquarters, and clashes ensued.
A villager of Molnoi stated that this area was peaceful until now. People who attacked our village were not from here. We know our neighbors, and none of them were part of the attack. Men are still in the villages, while women, children, and older people are in Tengnoupal's district headquarters for safety.
Residents were told to leave their homes at 5:30 a.m. on Friday because they saw strangers in the area.
Some armed troublemakers tried to cause problems in Molnoi village. When many people tried to go to Pallel, the security forces stopped them. Some of the armed troublemakers from the crowd fired at the security forces, hurting a few people, including an Army officer who was taken to a military hospital. The police used the least force needed to defend themselves.
The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), a big Meitei group, thinks that this was an attempt by Kuki groups to get attention from world leaders visiting the G-20 summit in Delhi.
